I am Google's biggest competition. Without the slow steady progress and 1st page placement my clients enjoy and have come to rely on, they would be relegated to the average, me-too, I'm nobody placement of those who don't consider SEO important.
Google does not make money in free organic listing. Well, not directly. Consider it a loss leader. If Google searches did not produce results, you wouldn't go there in the first place. Consistent visibility of your business products and services in the Google 1st page placement competes with Google Adwords - the paid listings. To add to that, most people consider the "natural" listing to be more credible.
It's been said many times, the only constant in this world is change. Google is no exception. It's the very reason I have a job at all (so thank you Google). I deal with this on a daily basis. Just so you can see it for real, here are the major Google updates in their relatively short history (minor updates happen so frequently that it's ridiculous to even enumerate them).
So much is changing and happening so quickly - staying on
top of Google is a full time job!
